Welcome to Share the Harvest, Bialas Farms’ 2016 Winter CSA.

Members of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program are essentially investing in a farm and sharing the benefits and risks with their farmers. Shareholders pay at the beginning of the winter season, then pick up a box of locally grown, seasonal veggies right at the farm every other week from November to January. Many people choose to ‘split’ a share with a friend. It’s a great way to try new things and share the experience of local, seasonal eating with friends and family.

These are examples of possible share boxes:

Sample Box #1

· 4 lbs Assorted Potatoes

· 3 lbs Onions

· 4 lbs Winter Squash

· 3 lbs Carrots

· 2 lbs Parsnips

· 1 box Shallots

· 2 Leeks

· 1 ½ lbs Spinach

· 1 bunch Kale

· 1 bunch Bok Choy

Sample Box #2

· 2 lbs Specialty Potatoes

· 1 ½ lbs Onions

· 1 pint Cippoline Onions

· 4 lbs Rutabagas

· 3 lbs Red and Golden Beets

· 1 bunch Swiss Chard

· 1 large Celery Root

· 1 bunch Parsley

· 2 lbs Broccoli

· 1 stalk Brussels Sprouts

At a typical Share the Harvest Winter CSA distribution you will find your share portioned and boxed, ready for you to pack into your reusable shopping bags. On some occasions, such as our Thanksgiving Open House, we may give you the opportunity to customize your own share. Please be aware that our prepared winter CSA boxes will always contain some variety of potatoes and squash.

In the event that we portion the shares, you will not be able to personalize them. However, you may choose to simply leave behind an item if you do not wish to share it with a friend. We do not offer refunds or reductions in price based on your preferences and we will not customize share packages.

The amount and variety of produce varies from distribution to distribution. We will do our best to keep the leafy greens growing in our heated greenhouses throughout the winter season.

You will be amazed by the wonderful dishes you can create with your farm share, and what a difference it makes to ‘eat local’. If you happen upon something you are unsure of, The FarmGirl will help you with recipes and serving ideas. Your fellow CSA members are also valuable resources and are always willing to share their own tips for utilizing their farm share.

In addition to your produce share, you will receive The FarmGirl Cooks’ e-newsletter prior to distribution. In the newsletter you will find a list of the items in your share along with storage tips and many recipes so you can make the most of your farm share.

Bialas Farms also offers a separate drop-off location in Ringwood, Passaic County, NJ. These winter shares come pre-boxed for our once-a-month pick-up in November & December.

Our share boxes include a variety of homegrown vegetables:

Field & Greenhouse Greens:
Broccoli, Curly & Tuscan Kale, Cabbage, Cauliflower & Romanesco, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Bok Choy, Leeks, Brussels Sprouts, Celery, Lettuce, Brussel Buds

Homegrown Popcorn [yellow & white], and Herbs [parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, tarragon, oregano, dried chili peppers].

Potatoes: Yukon gold, Carola, Red, Russet, Adirondack blue, French fingerling

Root crops: Carrots, Red & Gold Beets, Rutabagas, Parsnips, Celery Root/Celeriac, Turnips

Squashes: Ambercup, Buttercup, Butternut, Delicata, Acorn, Spaghetti, Jarrahdale Blue

Onions: Yellow, Red, Shallots, Cippolini, Garlic

The winter share box is designed to be your personal root cellar or pantry. It will consist of 12-15 different items, about 30 – 40 lbs. We’ll provide plenty of ideas for storage and use of your share items in our CSA e-newsletter. The majority of items in each share box will store for several weeks or more.

You may choose to receive one or both month’s boxes. If you are interested in the CSA winter share box but feel that it will be too much food, you may find it helpful to split a share with a friend or two. Please note split shares by including names, emails and phone numbers for all parties.

Inclement weather may make it difficult to travel to a distribution. For that reason, any shares not picked up during the stated distribution time will be stored inside our barn for 2 days. Shareholders may pick up their share at the farm [75 Celery Ave, New Hampton, NY] anytime before 5pm Monday. After that time, shares will be forfeited and there will be no refund. If you cannot make a pick-up, you may wish to find a friend to do it for you.

By choosing to shop locally, you are encouraging the growth and

sustainability of local and family-run businesses.

Thank you for supporting our family farm.

We look forward to Sharing the Harvest with you and your family.
